La Mata is part of the municipality of Torrevieja, sitting at its northern end between the sea and the La Mata lagoon, roughly halfway between Torrevieja town centre and Guardamar del Segura. Once a small fishing village, it is now a residential district with shops, cafés, restaurants, supermarkets and a weekly market – quieter than central Torrevieja but only a short drive away.
The main draw is La Mata beach, one of the longest in the area, with golden sand and dunes backed by pine woods at its northern end. Behind the village lies the La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons Natural Park, with walking and cycling trails, bird hides and views over the salt lakes, where flamingos and other water birds are a regular sight.
The climate is a big selling point: mild winters, warm summers cooled by sea breezes and very few rainy days. Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is about 35–40 minutes by car and Región de Murcia Airport (RMU, Corvera) roughly 45–50 minutes. Torrevieja centre is around 10 minutes away and Guardamar about 10–15 minutes.
